Support Local Businesses
We are living in hard economic times. Corporations are laying off tens of thousands of workers. But are the owners of these corporations losing their jobs? Probably not. However, this is not the case with local businesses. When they lose income, they may be forced to close down their life's work. I saw this happen to my brother in law who lost his bookstore and cafe. Now he's on unemployment. Some local businesses have been handed down through generations of families. The community dies when these businesses go under.
I am teaching my family to distinguish between a local business, a franchise and a corporation. I've explained why we always must try to give local business our money. In these difficult times, corporations will offer tempting credit card deals while some local businesses cannot afford to take credit period. But you win when you pay with cash as you keep within your means, plus you are helping people who work hard stay afloat and make a living. Let's keep small responsible business alive.
This is an ongoing pledge that should be fulfilled as often as possible.

I'm a retailer in a small town in Middle Georgia and I strongly agree...gotta keep us small business owners going!

This is something my husband and I strongly believe in, we seek to put our money where our mouth is. I love the idea of teaching our children "to distinguish between a local business, a franchise and a corporation." Thanks for the idea.

This is one cause that I can definitely fullfill. I try to visit this little coffee shop called "The What's Brewin' Cafe" almost every day. The owner is the nicest chap I know, and truly appreciates your patronage. Small businesses are going to go through some tough times, so your support is more important than ever! :-)

Susan,
It's an important cause! As a local Main Street manager I am constantly working with small locally owned businesses that lack the resources that larger chain or corporate businesses have.
I think the harder challenge is that even with a net increase of 13 businesses in our downtown last year (all of them locally owned) we still struggle to be seen as an economic development success. Somehow a chain retailer that sends all of it's profits out of town is still seen as more successful economic development than a local business that reinvests their profits in the community. I guess that's what happens when we confuse real estate development with economic development.
Anyway, thanks for starting this important action here at change.org
