Save Reading Rainbow

To: Kevin Dando (PBS) and Jill Corderman (PBS KIDS)

Started by: Nathaniel Whittemore

For 26 years, millions of children have learned to love reading by watching the treasured classic, Reading Rainbow. According to NPR, however, the show will not be renewed, based on a preference for shows that teach children how to read, instead of why to read. The mechanics of reading are important, yes, but they mean nothing when children don't actually enjoy the act. Reading Rainbow is one of the few institutions we have that actual imparts a love of reading. It would be callous to throw that away.

This would be a tragic loss for millions of children. Join this petition to urge PBS to keep the show on the air.

Save Reading Rainbow

Dear PBS,

For 26 years, millions of children have learned to love reading by watching the treasured classic, Reading Rainbow.

Yet now the show will not be renewed, based on a preference for shows that teach children how to read, instead of why to read.

The mechanics of reading are important, yes, but they mean nothing when children don't actually enjoy the act. Reading Rainbow is one of the few institutions we have that actual imparts a love of reading. It would be callous to throw that away.

We urge you to ensure that the show stays on the air and can continue to provide children around the country with a safe space to learn to love books, reading, and education.
